In a previous blog, we talked about how using a logic model can help you create competitive proposals.

But what goes into an effective logic model?

While there are many versions of this common evaluation tool, there are three pro tips for creating an effective logic model that makes your impact clear, measurable and highly fundable.

What is a Logic Model?

A logic model is a visual representation of your program evaluation plan or the way you measure if your project is making a real change. The logic model details the relationship between the resources you put into the project, the activities you will perform and the outcomes and impact (non-numerical, intangible difference) you will have.

Having a one- or two-page graphic makes it easier for funders and stakeholders to quickly understand your program and why you believe your approach will be effective.

Here are three tips for making your logic model memorable and compelling, followed by a template you can use.

Tip 1: Tell a Story

The first job of your logic model is to describe the relationship between your “inputs” (resources and activities) and your “outcomes” or results. Essentially, you want to tell the story of your impact.

In her book “Stories that Stick,” Kindra Hall defines a story plot as having three parts: normal, explosion, new normal

Your logic model should take your reviewer from normal (problem) to the explosion (the disrupting activities you will perform) and the new normal (the lasting change that results from those activities).

Applying this to a logic model, you may say our theory of change or core assumption is:

  • The problem: At-risk children often repeat the cycle of poverty they learned in their homes.

  • The cause: These children lack access to positive role models who can provide the support and guidance that kids need to shift their attitudes and behaviors.

  • The solution: Our program brings together community leaders to mentor students on how to dream and reach goals and also creates a pipeline where students are trained to be peer mentors, engaging students and providing support and accountability at every stage of their journey.

  • The result: The lasting impact is that students gain the soft skills, support and guidance that will increase their confidence and belief that they can change their future, motivating them to make wise, life-changing decisions.

Focusing on a specific problem, a targeted solution that fixes that problem and the lasting impact your project will have gives funders and stakeholders a clear case for why your initiative is valuable.

Tip 2: Be Specific

Sometimes, when creating a logic model, it’s easy to be generic. However, your case is much stronger when you’re specific.

For example, instead of noting “funding,” try “WIOA funding.”

Specific details are more credible than general statements.

Tip 3: Choosing the Right Metrics

Your outcomes need to prove that you have had a measurable impact. By measurable, we mean that every outcome needs a way to prove you met that outcome.

What you measure then needs to be tied to SMART goals (you can find more information on creating compelling SMART goals here).

You need to clearly outline how you're going to measure impact. And you need to ensure you have the systems, manpower and opportunity to capture these measurements.

The Wrap Up

In day-to-day operations, it can be hard to remember that the logic model is a tool not just for fundraising but for creating a competitive program.

Your logic model can help your leadership reflect on whether you have the team with the right qualifications, the right systems, enough funding, the right curriculum, etc. And clearly defining your outcomes and metrics will make it easier to craft compelling follow-up reports.
